Description

I didn't notice the lights from the plane (lower left) as I was snaping the shutter, but looking at it all now I'm intrigued how much of an undercurrent the concept of time is in this shot. The fort (albeit a reconstruction) is grounded in our slow-moving past and the jet streaking across the sky is all about the hustle of all things modern. Meanwhile the celestial objects in the sky show the indifference of the Universe as it goes about doing whatever universes do on Wednesday nights. Also, that streak of light sort of looks like a shooting star which is is pretty cool too. If I remember the evening correctly, I believe Saturn is up there as well.

Fort Vancouver during the lunar eclipse on 20 Feb. 2008. The moon here is in the last minutes of totality. I set the color-temp in the camera to 3000K (to prevent the sky from turning that hideous shade of orange cast by the city lights) and used my old Vivitar flash to cast the bluish light on the right side of the tower. The flash was off-camera (way to the right) and hand-held. The exposure was long enough for me to step a couple paces away and manually trigger my flash a few times to provide a bit of illumination.

Nice shot. Thanks for the interesting comments - and the tip about firing the flash manually. I would never think of that (just need to think of something to try it on).
